Authors Note: As you read this think about why drilling oil in Alaska isn’t good for many people or animals. Consider that it might not even help if America does this.
What if somebody just showed up and decided they wanted to start drilling oil on your land? This is what America is planning to do to Alaska’s wildlife for the sake of lower gas prices, although the U.S. has more then enough gas to last the future. America should absolutely not drill oil on Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Reserve.
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of the only large refuges left in America. If the U.S. drilled for oil in Alaska, it would disturb the wildlife. The animals would be affected because of all the noise and the big machines and they would leave. If the animals would try to leave, there might be a chance that they would get injured by going onto the highways. Not only does this take away homeland to the animals, but to the native Eskimos too. It’s not fair to take away their homes for the sake of more gas. Already 70% of the American people support protecting the National Wildlife Refuge according to the Courtesy of the National Resources Defense council.
Even though the drilling may affect the way animals live, it will also affect the way that people live too. The safety for the humans is just as bad. Unfortunately, fuel isn’t his most friendly source for the air. If you have ever walked behind a car and choked on the fumes, you know it isn’t good for the air and only causes pollution. There are also accidents while drilling oil. For example; pipe leaks, accidents from transportation, and oil spills. This would get people in all kinds of accidents. According to ecoworld.com , we would save three times the amount of oil for the future if we didn't drill oil in the refuge.
In addition to more gas, it wouldn’t even help the economy much. It wouldn’t be worth it to destroy the Arctic Refuge, and only get only a six month supply of oil. Although the Gas prices might go down the small amount of 4%, they would most likely rise back to the original amount within six months. When it is gone, the gas prices are predicted to go back up to the original price or go even higher. It will then be even less affordable for everyone across the country. Another reason why the U.S. shouldn’t be drilling even more oil is because America already uses 25% to 30% of the world’s oil and only three percent of it is on its own reserves according to The Courtesy of the Arctic Wildlife Organization. The only way for us to reserve using so much oil is to develop alternatives, like an electric car for example.
Overall, drilling oil in the Arctic Wildlife Reserve is a horrible idea. When it comes down to everything, it would just make things worse. The home to many would be destroyed and the safety for many would be affected. America should stay away from the consequences that this decision may have.
